Banned Books Week: Keep the Light On

by Elizabeth DiPrince on 2019-09-25T12:31:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

It’s time for Banned Books Week and the celebration of our freedom to read. This annual event highlights the reality that books continued to be banned or challenged because of objections of persons or groups. This week also celebrates the fact that through the work of librarians, teachers, students, and community members most books that are challenged continue to remain available to communities. This week is important for libraries because we believe in an individual’s right to seek and express ideas even if they are considered unorthodox or unpopular. Throughout this week events will take place in the library, and for more information about those events see our Banned Books Week Guide

Reported by the American Library Association, in 2018, there were 483 books challenged or banned. Of those 483, the Top 11 most challenged books are listed below with the reasons given for the challenge.
