Human Library: Challenge stereotypes through respectful conversations with others. On Tuesday, April 9th, from 1:40 to 4 pm, the Human Library will be available for check-out at UCA. Developed in Denmark in 2000 by the youth organization Stop the Violence, the Human Library is a collection of human beings, each representing a group in the community that is exposed to stigma, prejudice and/or discrimination. The event is intended to reduce personal bias and increase understanding, empathy, and respect.

Book subjects available for check-out include: gender identity, religion/spirituality, racial/ethnic identity, the nontraditional student experience, immigrant status, incarceration experience, addiction recovery, the international student experience, coping with grief, as well as intersections of these subjects, and many other areas of human experience. We also have a selection of print books on display and available for check-out that offer personal accounts of diverse individuals from all walks of life, coping with discrimination, finding self-acceptance, and seeking opportunities to extend inclusiveness in society. This display is located near the Reference Desk.

On April 9th, readers may come to the Torreyson Library 2nd floor, and volunteers will help them to select a human book for check-out. A catalog of book titles and descriptions is available to help readers select books based upon topics of interest.

Readers may check out one human book at a time for up to 20 minutes. Readers and books will be directed to a designated reading room where human books may share their stories. Both books and readers are encouraged to ask and answer questions, and to understand that there may be some life chapters that have not yet been published.

A counselor from the UCA Student Health Center will be present during this event to provide support for any readers or human books who need help processing difficult discussions. An American Sign Language interpreter will also be available to assist at this event.

If you plan to attend, we encourage you to register to help us prepare for this event. If you have any questions about this event, please call 501-450-5224 or ask at the Reference Desk.
