Book Talk: The Song of Achilles

Epic Heroes. A Grecian War. Tender Romance. While those things may not seem like they go together, Madaline Miller blends these themes seamlessly together in her book The Song of Achilles. Follow the legendary tale of the hero Achilles, told from the perspective of his best friend and lover, Patroclus. The story pulls the reader in with vulnerable and honest narration of Patroclus who lays everything bare for the reader: triumphs and failures alike. It feels genuine and authentic as the two grow and face hardships together, even when they aren’t always in agreement.

It is impossible to put into words how compelling and captivating The Song of Achilles truly is. Madaline Miller does such an excellent job of crafting this tale with depth and detail while still making it an enthralling and smooth read. The entire work flows and melds together as it covers both quiet, tender moments between people in love and epic, grandiose battles of the Trojan War. It’s a book for anyone who wants to be swept up in a mythic tale (Grecian pun intended).

What is truly refreshing is to see LGBTQIA+ representation in the media society consumes, which is why the LGBTQIA+ C.R.E.W. (Coalition for Resources, Encouragement, and Wellness) planned this Book Clubbing event. Song of Achilles feels honest in its portrayal of the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus: that everything isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, and sometimes the world is harsh, difficult, and unfair. It’s something that anyone can identify with, but especially those of the LGBTQIA+ community. The hope is to build a safe space for people to come together, find sanctuary in a good book, and ultimately, have a ton of fun!

The Book Clubbing event is going to be on Tuesday, February 11th at 4pm in Torreyson Library Room 215. It is open to anyone: students, faculty, staff, and members of the general community.
