Your Library Workers: National Library Workers Day 2019

Today, Tuesday, April 9, 2019, we celebrate National Library Workers Day. In honor of the day, I would like to share some fact about the library workers at Torreyson Library. There are forty-two library workers at Torreyson Library. That number represents both our library faculty, library technicians, and library supervisors. Our library workers serve in many different roles in the library. Some workers serve in public services, working with patrons to help them find and use library resources and services. Others work in technical services, performing the behind-the-scenes tasks of cataloging books, organizing archival collections, and ensuring access to online resources.

Some fun facts about our Torreyson library workers, based on an in-house survey, 75% of Torreyson library workers are native to Arkansas, and 40% graduated from UCA. When asked to name their favorite book series, they show a clear preference for Harry Potter, with Lord of the Rings coming in second. And while it is close, we have more library workers that are in the Star Trek camp then Star Wars. Lastly, going against stereotype there are far more dog lovers in the library than cat lovers, and we even have a couple of workers who prefer goats.

When asked about what they liked about working in the library, our library workers most often mentioned the ability to work with and help people.

“I love working in an environment that encourages learning and exploring the world around us! No topic is too big or small, simple or complex to be explored in the library! As librarians we aren't expected to KNOW everything, but we can definitely FIND everything!”

“When you work in a library, you are always in close proximity to so many creative and inquisitive people, fascinating ideas, and wonderful stories.”

“I get to talk to people all day about the interesting topics they are researching. What could be better than that?!”

“Being surrounded by knowledge and getting to see and interact with the students. Also our staff and faculty are pretty cool!”

Thank you for giving us a chance to introduce ourselves and why we enjoy the jobs we have. We love having the opportunity to serve the UCA campus and the local community.
