Converting Your Microsoft Word Document to a PDF File

Are you required to submit your end-of-semester research paper as a PDF file? Here’s how you can create a PDF file from your Microsoft Word document!

Step 1.

Once you have finished editing your Microsoft Word document and properly saved it, click the “File” tab in the upper left corner.

Step 2.

In the menu that appears on the left, click the “Save As” option.

Step 3.

Under the title of your document, click the dropdown menu where you see “Word Document (*.docx)” and select “PDF (*.pdf)” about halfway down the menu.

Step 4.

Make sure you know where you are saving your file! By default, it should be saved in the same place as your Word Document, but if you would like to select a different location and you don’t see your desired location on the current screen, you can clock “More options” or “Browse.”

Keep in mind that saving a Word document as a PDF is equivalent to printing your document digitally—once you do this, the PDF cannot be edited. If you want to make edits to your paper after you have saved your PDF, you will have to make the edits in your original Word document and repeat this process to save it as a new PDF. Happy writing!

Saving a Web Page as a PDF

Web pages can be difficult to print, as the formatting may not look the same on paper as it does on your screen. Saving a web page as a PDF and printing it from a PDF reader can help ensure that all the content fits properly on a sheet of paper and looks more clean when it prints.

 

Using Google Chrome

Step 1.

Click the three dots in the top right corner of your window and select “Print” in the dropdown menu (or simply press Ctrl+P on your keyboard).

Step 2.

Click the “Destination” dropdown menu in the Print menu that pops up and select “Save as PDF.”

Step 3.

At this point, the “Print” command at the bottom of the menu will change to “Save.” Click “Save” and select the folder in which you would like to put your new PDF file!

Using Microsoft Edge

Step 1.

Click the three dots in the top right corner of your window and select “Print” in the dropdown menu (or simply press Ctrl+P on your keyboard).

Step 2.

Click the “Printer” dropdown menu in the Print menu that pops up and select “Microsoft Print to PDF.” Then click the “Print” button below and select the folder in which you would like to save your PDF file.

Using Safari on a Mac

Go to the menu bar at the top of your screen and select “File,” then select “Export as PDF…” in the dropdown menu. Finally, choose the folder in which you want to save your PDF file!
