LGBT History Month at UCA

What is LGBT History Month?

The primary focus of this month is to celebrate the achievements of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender icons. During each or the 31 days of October, a new icon is featured.

The celebration began in 1994 led by Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson. The month of October was selected because public schools are in session, and because other existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur in October.

Why do we need LGBT History Month?

The LGBT community, at large, is not generally taught its own history at home, in schools, or through religious institutions. Through LGBT History Month, we learn about the national and international contributions of LGBT role models, and we strengthen the entire community by recognizing historical and contemporary LGBT icons. Put another way, LGBT History Month is a celebration of heritage for a community that may not otherwise learn about its own rich history.

How is UCA celebrating LGBT History Month?

The campus will have many different events throughout the month. Check out the Events tab of our guide to see the full calendar. The library will host/ sponsor three events:

Stop by our table in the lobby of the library for a free pronoun pin.
We will have premade pins available, or you can make your own!

Thursday, October 24, 6pm - 7pm, LIB 200 Instruction Room
Kai Coggin will read from her book Incandescent – a collection of poetry written during the height of the 2016 presidential election. She will also being signing copies of her book.

Thursday, October 24, 1:30pm, Old Main Lawn
A gathering UCA RSOs and community partners to let the UCA LGBTQ+ community know that they are supported
and welcomed at UCA and in our community.
